Important Things!
True Names; A usually abstract, but incredibly significant and meaningful word, that represents both halves of a divided soul. This name is like a large birthmark; not everyone has them, in fact most people don’t and remain blissfully unaware and whole. While it may only appear as a slightly off color, blotchy birthmark from birth through childhood.. The name gradually becomes more defined and perfectly legible as an actual word on the person’s body. Some surface through simple puberty, while other’s only appear after a traumatic event, or even only after they’ve come in close proximity to their other half. This name is a person’s most sacred treasure and most powerful spell; even more important than their other half’s physical existence. Should their partner die, while devastating, the surviving half is comforted by the fact they will meet again in their next life and continue to be together throughout eternity. However.. Though considered impossible, should a name somehow be removed.. The immense psychological and emotional pain would be far too much for either half to bear and they would almost literally die of a broken heart, or wind up suffering until eventually committing suicide in most cases.
Named; The luckiest of the spell users. They always have someone who needs them. Wants them. Loves them. Someone who completes them and makes them happier than any other person could ever be. A Named pair consists of two halves of a soul, who are constantly reborn and who constantly seek one another out in every life they live. They are part of the same entity, divided and destined to reunite for an eternity. Named pairs are closer than lovers could ever be. Most do wind up in romantic relationships with their partners, as they are literally soul-mates for one another. The ones who don’t, though, will always be mistaken for being lovers all the same; and any girlfriends or boyfriends they may have, often become incredibly jealous and frustrated with how close the pair will be in comparison to the dating couple. Many people consider them to be the strongest of the three spell-users, however, there are many factors that can affect the truth of this. Named pairs consist of a Sacrifice and a Fighter, and unlike Blanks or Zeros, can never switch roles within their units.
Blanks; Some say Blanks are half of a Named pair whose name was removed, and have since been reincarnated as a normal human with no name. With this theory, the tremendous pain they went through continues to echo; creating a sense of emptiness and loneliness, desperately wishing to be part of a whole again despite being whole themselves. Blanks are seemingly normal humans who have the same sense of the world and the same longing for a partner as the Named; they are exactly as the term suggests. Utterly Blank. They are capable of spells and everything needed for battle.. But they have no name to be associated with. Named’s who cannot find their other half, or whose other half has died, will occasionally seek out a Blank to pair up with for spell-battles. They can fight unbound, but their power is significantly lessened. So the Named will take it upon themselves to physically carve their name into the Blank’s skin; usually with a blade of sorts, though more sadistic Named’s may use anything from broken glass to their own nails to put their mark of ‘ownership’ upon their temporary partner. A Blank must choose wisely before allowing themselves to be branded in such a way. Should the Named’s true partner appear, they will be abandoned almost instantly; and most Named would never ‘re-use’ a Blank with someone else’s name already marking them, even if it has faded.
Zero; A type of artificially created ‘Named’. Zeros were mass produced by an organization known as Septimal Moon years ago, through geneticists and the magic from powerful Named within the group. Zero’s name; a simple 0 that is full and complete from birth. Many Zeros are unstable; genetically, physically, mentally and emotionally, and because of this, there have been a number of incidents where the Zero mark has faded from their bodies entirely and their powers go with it. Zeros are genetically engineered to all have Congenital analgesia; where they are physically and mentally, unable to perceive, feel or respond to any kind of physical pain. They cannot feel when they get cut, or a bone gets broken, or if there’s a bruise after being hit. Pain is only a vague idea they’ve heard of, but have never experienced in their life, and likely never will. The side effect of this, is that they also cannot physically respond to temperature changes. Their bodies do not sweat nor shiver to signal they are becoming to warm or too cold, and thus, they must rely on thermometers and the like, to tell them how they should be dressing according to the weather. Another part of their modified genetics, are the fact that Zeroes are completely interchangeable. They can change partners at will or by command, without losing any of their power and strength; some Zeros have even been known to switch from being a Sacrifice to a Fighter and vice versa. They are often looked down upon by Named and even Blanks, for switching partners-- even when most Zeros detest switching partners once they have already bonded.
Spell Battles; While no one has been able to determine why Named and Blanks possess these magical powers over words that normal humans don’t.. One thing that is known, is that they have always been around throughout history. You have heard of witches, warlocks, mages and even gods and goddesses, naturally; in all actuality, all of these were Named and Blanks, before they learned how to keep their abilities better hidden from the normal world. When two opposing pairs decide to engage in battle for whatever reason, one of the Fighters will initiate it by a certain phrase; the most common being “I declare this to be a battle by spell/word.” or something similar. The other Fighter will then accept; they cannot actually fight without accepting, however the one who initiated can still attack their now defenseless opponent should no answer be given. Once accepted, a pulse of energy and power spreads out in a perfect circle from the two teams’ location; all other pairs in a mile or so radius are alerted of the start of the battle from this pulse. From that point on, the battle truly begins. Spells are essentially poetic magic that palpably manifest, through the energy and magic within the Fighter’s words. They can be anything; attacks, restraints, defense, escape, power-ups. But they will always be worded in enchanting metaphors, similes, and can easily be likened to poems and songs. If an attack lands, the Sacrifice is not only damaged, but becomes restrained where they were hit, by the energy of the other team’s attack. These restraints usually take the form of cuffs and chains, though some may look like bandages, rope or ribbon, depending on the pair. The battle will continue until the pairs call a truce, a Sacrifice is too injured to continue, a pair has become totally restrained and unable to continue, or a pair manages to disengage and escape.
Sacrifice; The Sacrifice of a pair is typically the ‘leader’. They are normally the more passive or introverted personality of the two, but there’s always exceptions. The Sacrifice’s role in Spell Battles, is to take all the damage inflicted by the opposing team; they also call out commands to their Fighter, on how to attack, defend, ect. They are usually the only ones to be restrained in battle, however if they are weak or inexperienced, their Fighters will often take half of the damage to ease their pain, even if it costs them a victory.
Fighter; The Fighter of a pair is typically the ‘bodyguard’. They are normally the more aggressive, assertive or extroverted personality of the two, but again, always exceptions. In battles, it is the Fighter’s job to fight (obviously) and defend their Sacrifice. The better the Fighter, the less damage to the Sacrifice, the longer they can continue to fight. Normally they only defend by counterattacks and defensive spells, but in some cases as mentioned before, they will sometimes take damage them selves to help their Sacrifice.
